Doodled in the name of love

Happy Valentine’s Day!

As promised, we’re throwing a doodle party here. Last week, I invited everyone to doodle love with me, and I’m so delighted by the response, especially because I know for many of you, it’s an act of bravery to show your doodles in public. So thank you for being brave, for answering my call to PLAY, and for ensuring that I wouldn’t be standing here in my party hat all alone.

Before I share all our beautiful scribbling, I want to share a link to Anne Lamott’s big idea: Occupy Valentine’s Day. In her reclaiming of the day, it’s not about waiting for a card, or a box of chocolate, or a hot date, it’s about big, fat, fearlessly openhearted love for yourself and the whole damn world. Here’s part of what she wrote in her Facebook update…

What could be more precious, than a day you thought was going to be about anxiety or pressure or neglect or artifice or butter fats, that instead is going to be about freedom, and creation? I wish I could hand out easels, paints, hikes and short stolen walks and berries, but I can’t. So you have to promise you will give these to yourselves. That would be so subversive, and warm my aging hippie heart.

There’s more to Anne Lamott’s Valentine’s Day utopia. You should read it. It’s short and sweet and will warm your trembling little Valentine-y heart.

Okay, onward!

Annie

Annie Neugebauer (Annie didn’t actually draw a love doodle. She drew this to cleverly represent WIP – work in progress – but I repurposed it here because using it as a kinky love doodle makes me laugh)

That’s all for now. I’m going to continue doodling love all the way through February, so there will be one more love doodle post on the 28th. Feel free to send me more-more-more, and I’ll include whatever I get.

I hope you all have a great Valentine’s Day, however you spend it.

My Love Essay cards will be available on Etsy over the weekend. In the meantime, for Valentine’s Day, in case you haven’t seen it (or haven’t seen it lately), here’s my Fearless Love Manifesto video, with music by the incredibly talented Juliana Finch.

xoxo

Oh, the love…what a blessing for my day.

Ooh how did I miss this? Oh well, super fun! Happy hugs to you!

    • j February 14, 2013 at 9:31 am #

I almost invited you personally, but didn’t want to put you on the spot. (You could send me a doodle for my post on the 28th!)

Sure! Another Love doodle? Or a different topic?

        • j February 14, 2013 at 9:43 am #

Love for all of February, baby!

          And YAY!!!

Wow. I absolutely *love* it! The feel is wonderful and I found myself smiling at the different expressions within the doodles! What a gift!

Like you, I celebrate love year-round; however, I tend not to celebrate calendar holidays, so I surprised us all (myself included *grin*) by honoring this holiday and creating a simple eBook titled “A Celebration of Your Presence” full of photo affirmations celebrating the gift of *your presence*. I shared it complimentary with my friends and subscribers to my site. The joy of it is that the photos are of my favorite spaces and the affirmations are from my heart…I *love* chocolate, but celebrating presence stays with one much longer….

I think that is why this post made me smile…your celebration of love is a celebration of community and creation…*fun* to collaborate with love…(And I love the captions “because I asked”!)

    • j February 14, 2013 at 9:38 am #

I think that means I should have gotten your e-book. Hmmm… I’ll look for it. My gmail has been flaky. i can send okay, but I sometimes don’t get what people send to me.

On the “because I asked) caption…

I texted my oldest son and said “You should doodle me some love because I’m posting love doodles on Valentine’s day.” He texted back, “I’m on it.” Then I told The Boy (my youngest son), “Not to put you under any pressure, but Dillon is doodling for me, so as of right now, he’s the favorite.”

Bad parenting 101. (But I love their doodles!)

This made me laugh! Love that you repurposed mine, and I love all of the doodles! Especially the venn diagrams!

    • j February 14, 2013 at 3:43 pm #

So happy you’re happy to be repurposed. Whew! :)

Love it! I’m delighted to see so many doodlers at the party.

I’m glad you saw the zebra! :)

    • j February 14, 2013 at 3:44 pm #

I went looking for a bunny and fell in love with a zebra. (That sounds profound, doesn’t it?) I’ll steal the bunny on the 28th. #iamaterriblecriminal #constantlyconfessing

So much wonderfulness here I’m at a loss for how to comment on it. Except to say

    ❣ ❣ ❣ ❣ ❣ ❣ ❣

Now I’m off to share some doodles on FB!

These all warmed my heart, j, what a great sight of love!

The Chef and I agreed to buy presents, but only because we both wanted a book. His cost more, so in the same amount, I got a book and the curious lists journal (like the one you mentioned – it’s been on my wishlist ever since!). We’ll only exchange gifts Saturday morning however, he’s at work all day today and tomorrow. The restaurant is full, he hasn’t called yet this evening.
So there you have it. A day of love, celebrated on the weekend, without seeing each other at all on the 14th. You know what I love about this? If it wasn’t our weekend off, it could’ve been any other weekend really not necessarily this one, close to V-Day ;)

PS: I adore cats, so that first doodle especially warmed my heart! <3

    • j February 14, 2013 at 3:51 pm #

I really need to pull out my curious lists book. I haven’t played with it for a long time. Can I just say how great it is that you and the Chef justify Valentine’s Day presents because they’re books? Love that!

Have fun on Saturday, my friend. Hug the Chef for me.

Great doodles j! Clearly, my family carries the doodling load for me!

I don’t know if you should let yourself off that easily. You have one more chance to play with us on the 28th!

  9. hippiechick February 14, 2013 at 5:55 pm #

    Wow. These doodles rock!

Right? Maybe you can rock with us next time. *puppy eyes*

Oh j. This is just what the doctor ordered. Fun, color and loving words. I love every single word and doodle here. Now that I know you are wishing for a balloon ride, I am scratching the plans to pick you up in a hot, red convertible and changing them to drifting over your house, lowering the hot, red basket and picking you up so we can lift and drift for as long as we want! Thank you so much for all of the wonder here. I feel as though I’ve had a lofty balloon ride for hours on perfect, blue sky day. Yeah, you made me feel like that. Hero! <3

    • j February 15, 2013 at 9:38 am #

I felt the same way as the doodles were coming in, then again as I assembled them, then again as I gazed at what we did. Love this community and the magic we create. And you can pick me up in either a red convertible or a red balloon. I. Am. Ready. :)

I like the idea of a holiday that, in the eyes of many people, is perceived perhaps as a source of anxiety, becoming just a time to connect, whether with ourselves or others — I think it would be great for us to adopt the same perspective on all holidays, as they often seem to me to be freighted with too many expectations and too much artificial structure.

    • j February 15, 2013 at 9:40 am #

We did that with my extended family this past Christmas. No gifts, just the families all getting together which seems to be something we can manage only once a year these days. I thought it was our best Christmas ever. So much less stressful.

I am happy you can’t stop doodling cats. I look forward to more. This cat (at the top) I have name Delicious because that is what she is. Just yummy!

    • j February 18, 2013 at 9:25 am #

      I love that name! <3

What a great collection you’ve assembled! I hope your own doodles find their way onto postcards! I especially have my eye on the knitting ball :) — and I don’t knit! ~lucy
