An art-behind-the-scenes post

It’s been a while since I did a behind the scenes art-in-progress post, so let’s do one now! A while ago I stumbled on this quote from poet/writer Lucille Clifton, which I loved and felt inspired by: What they call you is one thing. What you answer to is something else. I wrote it on a sticky note, forgot about it, found it weeks later and, one night, decided to play with it in my sketch book.… Read more

Come play with me!

A quick post to let you know about some upcoming (and in-progress) events. First, I’ll be teaching my new, improved mandala-making workshop at the Craft Makers Studio in Pleasanton, CA, on Saturday, September 30th, 10 am – 1 pm. Come, and you’ll learn everything you need to make beautiful, intricate, personally meaningful mandalas. When you leave, you’ll have 1-2 completed mandalas, and a mandala-making kit, which includes all the tools I use to make my own mandalas.… Read more

On art, and leaping, and pirate-assassins

As of July 22nd, I have sixteen original watercolor illustrations on exhibit in downtown Livermore. It’s exciting news and I want to tell you how it happened in a story that has everything – pirate-assassins, car crashes, dastardly deeds, heroism, and a sparkly emu named Jasper. Are you ready? Okay, let’s do this! Once upon a time (in early June), Berkshire Hathaway Home Services (a downtown business that regularly hosts shows to promote local artists) invited me to do a summer show.… Read more

It’s almost here!

In fact, this illustration (from the book) looks just like me right now. The book is divided into 30 days. Each day, I suggest a self-loving theme, and a way to bring that theme to life.… Read more

Arming the resistance… with art!

The past couple of months have been almost as chaotic for me personally as they have been for the country. Almost. My father passed away suddenly in December and my mom, who is more fierce than anyone knows, has had so much to deal with over the last several weeks that I don’t think she’s fully processed his passing. Since he died, I’ve been straddling two households so I can be there for her, bringing my work back and forth because I don’t want to lose the opportunities that have opened up for me over the past year.… Read more

Mindful Living is here (plus, freebies)

Update: Via eyes-closed, wand-wielding, magic, winners have been picked! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have so many things I want to write about now, so much on my mind – the aftermath of an election that has left the country more divided than ever (and left me uncharacteristically pessimistic); my father’s death in December, our complicated relationship, and the unwieldy nature of grief; my plans and wishes for the year ahead; the magic healing power of art and creative exploration… I will be writing (and illustrating) about all of that in the weeks ahead.… Read more

Do we smell cake? (An illustration in 30 seconds)

Today’s post is just 30 seconds of fun, because it’s been a busy, politic-y, soul-searching couple of weeks, and I thought maybe we could all use some doodly little party pups. My coloring book illustration process works like this: First, I sketch the design. When necessary (especially for book cover sketches), I review the sketch with my editor and once we’re both happy, I trace a clean copy, which I scan and upload.… Read more
