It’s been a while since I did a behind the scenes art-in-progress post, so let’s do one now!
A while ago I stumbled on this quote from poet/writer Lucille Clifton, which I loved and felt inspired by:
What they call you is one thing. What you answer to is something else.
I wrote it on a sticky note, forgot about it, found it weeks later and, one night, decided to play with it in my sketch book.
I loved lettering it, playing with just two colors, and trying to capture both the quote’s playfulness and its badassery. I liked the result so much, I decided to turn it into a print.
First I re-sketched it, bigger and on my favorite drawing paper.
Once I had everything where I wanted it, I traced it in ink. I usually do this with trace paper, but I hadn’t decided how I was going to color it yet, so I used my light box to trace it onto another sheet of paper. Either way, the idea is to get an inked version without the erasures, smudges, or guidelines of my original sketch.
Next, I scanned it, but since my paper is 9×12 and my scanner is 8.5 x 11, I had to scan it in two pieces…
And then use Photoshop’s Photomerge function to combine them into one again.
It occurred to me that it would make a good “don’t let the bastards get you down” sort of card too. So I created a card in Photoshop…
Printed it out…
And popped it into the Etsy order I was filling as a surprise extra gift for my unsuspecting customer. :)
Both the card and the print are available now in my Etsy shop!
